Super moist white cake with lemon filling and fluffy white icingLast week was my birthday.  It was a wonderful day.  My son took me out to the movies and my husband took me out to dinner.  There was, however, something missing…birthday cake!  Okay…at my age (officially eligible for retirement according to the Social Security Administration), I really need to be watching the sweets, but birthdays come but once a year.  I decided a couple days later that I would bake the cake that was my favorite since childhood – super moist white cake topped with fluffy, not-too-sweet white frosting and creamy lemon filling between the two layers.

There are hundreds of recipes out there for good potato salad and everyone has their favorite.  Americans have been enjoying one version or another of this side dish that makes great use of the humble potato since the mid 19th century.  Despite its masquerading as a popular All-American dish, its origins probably began among the Teutonic peoples in and around Germany, where it was traditionally served hot with a warm bacon, vinegar, and onion dressing.  The French and English preferred a cold dish with mayonnaise-based dressing.  While I do appreciate warm German potato salad, it is the cold version that comes to mind when someone refers to this favorite.

When I think of salad, I automatically think of various rough chopped or torn vegetables, sometimes joined by pasta, meat, chicken, eggs (of course), cheese, and or seafood.  I don’t think of marshmallows, puréed fruits, gelatin, etc as ‘salad’.  Right or wrong,...

Lucky Pierre - Marans roosterIt’s been a L-O-N-G time since my last post.  What with wedding preparations (my oldest son), being up and down with some persistent ailment, and being deluged with web design and maintenance duties (for everyone else’s website – not mine); I let my Fowler’s Farm Fresh site and this blog, fall by the wayside.  Anyway… 

I am happy to report that for the time being we are ‘roosterless’.  Now I have said, and it still is true that one does not need a rooster in order for hens to produce eggs.  So why did a rooster reside for a little over a year at FFF?
